◎ Personality:

“When something smells, it's usually the Butz.”

That little saying has been around since Larry Butz came into the world, and to this day he still causes trouble wherever he goes.

As stated above, Larry is notorious for his knack for running into trouble and his horrible luck. It's pretty much the defining trait of his character. Whenever Larry is around, something bad is about to happen, whether it's him unintentionally getting involved in murders or running his mouth at the least strategic of moments. Phoenix, the title character of the series, is even afraid to cross-examine him in court because he could easily cause the tides to turn in extremely unfavorable directions just by opening his mouth and saying the wrong things. At the same time though, his slip-ups can lead to big breaks in a case, so this trait isn’t completely negative. It’s just positive at his expense in these situations.

Even though his lawyer friends are reluctant to have him around whenever a case is going on (and for good reasons), Larry has proven that he can be useful to them. The best example was in Turnabout Goodbyes, when he saved Edgeworth from receiving a guilty verdict by manning up and testifying, even when the judge had already given a guilty verdict moments before. If he hadn't stepped in at the moment, his friend would have been convicted of murder. He himself knows that he tends to cause a lot of trouble for his friends, but he’s very thankful to have them around. If it weren’t for them, he’d be in a lot more trouble than he could ever imagine. Both Phoenix and Edgeworth proved him innocent of murder several times, after all. Because of this, he is extremely loyal to them and tries to help as much as he can, even if most of the time he tends to hurt their case rather than help it.

The next prominent trait of Larry's is that he's somewhat of a hopeless romantic. The majority of his motivations revolve around impressing a girl, whether it's getting a specific job that "chicks dig, apparently", breaking the bank to buy her whatever her heart desires, or far less impressively, writing a poorly constructed love letter to her to express his feelings. He's a genuinely nice guy who means well, and will do anything to make someone he cares about happy, but he's far too trusting (often naive and oblivious) at the same time, and more often than not, it gets the better of him. This is shown right away in The First Turnabout, where the prosecution found out that his girlfriend was cheating on him even before he did. Whenever his latest girlfriend gets tired of him (which tends to be pretty quickly), Larry is left heartbroken and confused that he would get dumped so easily. After an emotional episode, he moves on to his next girlfriend and new job.

Speaking of emotional episodes, Larry in general is quite emotional. One minute he'll be outgoing and friendly (if not obnoxious) with plenty of jokes to crack, and the next, he'll be in tears and wanting to die. Although it's not too hard to cheer him up, his mood swings can become a bit of an annoyance. It’s partially because of his erratic emotions that he tends to run his mouth in the first place, and that’s why he gets a negative reaction from his lawyer friends whenever he shows up at a crime scene. However, his inability to properly control his emotions can work to their advantage too. Seriously, Larry is downright terrible at masking his feelings, he truly wears his heart on his sleeve at all times. It's not at all hard to know when he's hiding something because he'll get visibly distressed and verbally defensive when pressed about it. As to be expected, it's equally easy to pry information out of him as he'll quickly give in to pressure.

It's possible that his mood swings stem from the fact that he has a rather large inferiority complex, which becomes apparent in Bridge to the Turnabout when he's doing everything he can to help with a case but he ends up being mocked for his screw-ups instead. He sees his successful lawyer friends and wonders why he can't seem to do better in life and why he's such a loser for it. He points out his own failures (or someone points them out to him), and desperately wishes to become a better person, but for some reason he never seems to stick to his goals. No matter how much he tries to change or how many different jobs he cycles through on his quest for change, he's still the same Butz. It's apparent that he notices this himself, and even embraces it in the end. Despite all of that, when murders or cases aren't involved his friends do enjoy his company whether they admit it or not. He has the tendency to lighten up situations just by being himself.

And lastly something that should also be noted is that in the last few cases he appeared, Larry shows that he is quite skilled in the arts. He's an excellent artist, whether or not his friends will actually admit it, and he's also a very good actor when he puts his heart into it. In Bridge to the Turnabout, he became an apprentice to a children’s book author and discovered that art is something he is truly good at. It was thanks to his controversial drawing that a huge break in the case was made. This happened again in The Inherited Turnabout when his accurate sketches revealed a huge secret that the culprit was trying to hide when they didn't notice him drawing them. In Turnabout Ablaze, Larry becomes a stage actor for The Steel Samurai, a popular fictional character in the Ace Attorney world. Edgeworth (a huge fan of the Steel Samurai) comments that his performance was quite moving, so he must be really good at memorizing lines and choreography, along with delivering a believable performance. For the last three cases that he appeared, his occupation had to do with the arts. This ties in with what he said at the end of Bridge to the Turnabout, that he finally found something he likes to do, and he seems to be sticking with it.

◎ Powers/Abilities: Larry is a regular human, so he doesn't have any superhuman powers or anything like that. I do think his artistic skill is worth noting here as well though, because it's pretty much the only thing he's shown to be good at and have some confidence in throughout the series. His preferred art is sketching and painting, but he also can sculpt (he made a Thinker clock for his girlfriend and the first case and it ended up being the murder weapon oops) and act to a degree.

◎ Weapons & Other Special Inventory:
- his artist's smock
- an extra orange blazer

CEREALIA-Specific

◎ Element: Fire
◎ Sense: Touch. I think this fits in well with Larry's creative side (painting and sculpting, generally working with his hands) and just how animated of a person he tends to be. You have no idea how hard it was not to put scent.
◎ Seven Character Traits: (loyal, well-intentioned, creative) | (trouble-magnet, emotional, insecure) + trusting

Samples

◎ First-Person Sample:

[When the feed starts up, it looks like Larry's holding up his CereVice selfie-style, but the camera angle is more so viewers can see behind him. Not much is visible due to him taking up a good deal of the screen, but it looks like a living room behind him. The furniture is super simple, if not even a little drab. But Larry looks positively excited about it.]

Yo, so, can we talk about the awesome technology this place has for a sec? 'cause man, I still can't even get over this part--

[...He'll have to apologize to those who get motion sickness easily later because without any warning, he throws his CereVice into the air. Just as it looks like it's going to sail back down to the ground, it stops into a hovering state right at Larry's eye level.]

This thing is so cool! Hovering phones with touch screens, who would've thought of that?

[Hi, he's from 2019 Japanifornia where basic dumbphones are still all the rage.]

But I actually wanted to talk about the Hologram thingy. [HOLO(gm), Larry.] Now I thought the floating phones were cool, but I just bought this new hologram for my bachelor's pad here and turning it on for the first time was the craziest thing I'd ever seen! And believe me, I've seen some crazy stuff. But no, girls flying over bridges definitely loses to this!

[There was no such thing as a girl flying over a bridge and he knows it, but that's not the point right now!]

So what are you guys doing with your places now that you can make them into basically anything? This was all I could afford right now, but I really wanna make my place super swanky when I get enough credits. I'm thinkin'... [He makes a sweeping motion to a blank wall across the room from his couch.] A huge flat-screen can go here. I think I saw a hologram mod for one too, so I'm gonna go for it!

Man, I'm gonna need an extra job to rack up enough credits for this...oh! [With a snap of his fingers,] Hey, I know! I can try that ViViD game again! That'd be way more fun than a second job. Anyone wanna try it out with me? I promise I'll make a good Player 2!

[Who needs to worry about destroyed worlds and backup data or whatever when there's all this fun tech to play with?]

◎ Third-Person Sample:

Bright and flashing lights, loud music, tons of excited and energetic dancers...yep, if Larry had to pick any of Cerealia's districts as his favorite, the Entertainment District would definitely have to be it.

…It would be his favorite mainly because it seemed to be the only place he could hold a job for more than a couple weeks. Seriously, it was getting really difficult to support the lifestyle he wanted to live in this super awesome futuristic city (said lifestyle being spending as much as he could to woo the ladies of Cerealia) with crappy hours from the several jobs he went through over in the Marketplace. Sure, he was pretty sure he'd be deaf at an early age from this bartender job in Niteo, but it definitely paid the bills, so to speak, so he'd stick with it as long as he could. Despite the shady things going on and the general lingering sense of danger at all times, he really did like this place because the women that showed up in the club tended to be...well, from a scale of one to ten, most of the time they were twelves. Talk about a choice location to score a couple dates!

As luck would have it, a lovely woman, model-like with plenty of potential, appeared at his counter as he was complacently polishing a glass like all cool bartenders do and pondering about his life in the city so far. Just the sight of her caused him to snap back to reality and put on his best suave stance. After all, there was a high chance she was single and ready to mingle!

Of course, before he could ask her what a lovely lady like her was doing alone on a fine night like tonight, she threw out a drink order and he was unfortunately reminded that there really wouldn't be much mingling when he was on the job. Still, he was determined to make an impression on her. Who knows, maybe she'd be back another night. Better yet, maybe she'd wait up for him to get off his shift! Hey, it wouldn't be the first time he managed to get that lucky. He could pull it off again!

So he put on his best display of making her drink with all the cool bartender moves he learned during his training period, shuffling through bottles of drink ingredients with excellent speed and shaking them all-together in a glass. When he was done, the drink looked absolutely beautiful: layers of ingredients neatly stacked on each other to give off the look of a sunset, all topped off with a slice of lemon. Who said you can't be artistic with making drinks? And to Larry's credit, his performance seemed to catch the woman's attention, as she looked rather impressed with the whole thing. Sweet! Maybe he had made an opening! Now to just force his way into a thoughtful conversation about her plans for the night as he extended the drink toward her with a wink...

“Your drink, miss--waaaugghh!

A fatal mistake had been made while he was putting on his drink-making performance. Some of the drink mix from one of his bottles had spilled onto the floor under him without him noticing, and as he took a step forward to hand the drink over the counter, he slipped right on the newly formed puddle. This slip-up proved to be catastrophic, because that beautiful sunset drink was now a not-so beautiful watercolor painting on the woman's all-white dress. Larry could only watch in horror as she gasped at the drink spilling all over her, instinctively grabbing at the wet fabric in a futile attempt to assess and fix the damage. There was no saving that dress. Once she realized that, she glared up at the hapless bartender, ready to give him a piece of her mind. Nearing a panic attack from his horrible blunder, there was only one way for Larry to react.

“Ohhhh nooo! I-I-I'm so sorryyyyy!”

Minus one potential date for Larry Butz. Maybe the Entertainment District wasn't his favorite place after all, because it certainly didn't rid him of moments like this.

◎ Is your character retaining any previous game memories? No.
